Getting back on the dirt road was easier than they had anticipated. Following the trail that had taken them to the cave, they continued for less than a mile until it joined the road. Following the road was dangerous because if anybody was looking for them, they were likely to take that route—but Dan and Claire had no choice. It was clear from the map that it was the only way to get off the mountain without having to climb down dangerous slopes. They walked in silence.

The dirt road ended some five hundred yards ahead into the plain in which the Cairo–Suez road ran, and when they reached that point, Dan stopped. “It’s time to get rid of the Kalashnikov,” he said. “I feel much better with it, but if the Egyptian police catch us with a weapon, we run the danger of being thrown in jail forever.”

“You’re right. Let’s not take chances,” Claire agreed.

Dan took the Kalashnikov and its magazines and hid them behind a rocky formation at the side of the road. Then they continued to walk on the road that unwound with a light slope down toward the plain. They had barely emerged from the mountain when they saw on the right a vision that stopped them in their tracks—a Jeep standing a mere four hundred yards from them. Next to the Jeep, two figures sat beside a fire.

“Bshari’s men!” Dan whispered. “Let’s go back.”

They retraced their steps until they were past a bend in the road and sure to be out of sight of the Jeep. They kept whispering.

“What do we do now?” asked Claire, a ring of despair in her voice.

“I can run back to get the Kalashnikov and give them a fight,” said Dan, but his voice lacked conviction.

“And get ourselves killed? There must be another way,” Claire objected.

“Wait here for a minute,” said Dan, “I want to take a better look. Stay hidden from the road behind this rock, just in case.”

“Be careful, okay?”

Dan nodded and walked away, disappearing after the road bend. Ten minutes later, he was back, a look of satisfaction on his face.

“I think I’ve got it,” he said. “The rocky formations by the side of the road—like this one—continue in the plain below. We can’t go to the left and try to circumvent the Jeep because it’s all flat ground. With the moon as bright as it is, they would spot us in no time. But if we keep close to the mountain and circumvent them from the right, we will be low against the rocks, and our silhouettes will be much less visible from where the Jeep stands. Plus, we can do part of the way behind rocks and keep low in between. I believe we can make it. If we don’t make too much noise, that is. In the desert, every noise carries, so we must be careful.”

“What time is it?” asked Claire.

“Almost ten; why?”

“Because we should wait until they go to sleep before doing all that stealthy stuff you’re planning,” she said, smiling.
